About Our Foundation
The Granite Dells Preservation Foundation was founded in 2010 to preserve the Granite Dells for generations to come. Our volunteer board of directors takes on several public education and fundraising initiatives every year to support:
1.) City land purchase for preservation
2.) Public awareness and support for a regional park & preserve
3.) Increased public access to the Dells.
Our Preservation Successes
The Granite Dells Preservation Foundation is a member of a coalition of activists, community groups, and conservation organizations dedicated to protecting the biodiversity and beauty of the Granite Dells. We found our first major success in 2021. In partnership with numerous organizations, we built a flood of public support for the City of Prescott's purchase of 474 acres of land in the Dells for preservation.
The Granite Dells Preservation Foundation built on this succes with projects to improve public access to the dells. In 2023, the board raised funds to install paneling along the Peavine Trail, improving both the view and safety of the trail. Then, in 2024, we successfully petitioned for "no name" Creek to be renamed Elisabeth Creek in the USGIS. This was done in honor of one of Prescott's most notable stewards for conservation, Elisabeth Ruffner.
Our most recent success was the passage of proposition 484 in 2025. Prop 484 was a citizen driven ballot initiative which modified the City of Prescott charter to require voter approval before any publicly owned park land or natural open space can be sold or leased by the City. Through public information campaigns and significant public organization efforts, the proposition passed with a mandate from voters.
