The Granite Dells Preservation Foundation was incorporated in Arizona in June of 2010 for the benefit and preservation of the Granite Dells, Prescott and Yavapai County’s iconic mountain range. This 501(c)(3) non-profit has these objectives: (1) protecting ecological and scenic integrity, (2) partnering to enhance land management, (3) educating on historical, cultural, and ecological values, (4) advising and enhancing recreation and tourism, and (5) fundraising for all of the above.
Our desire is to work with city and county governments and all interested constituencies to expand upon existing city-owned open space properties to create a Granite Dells Regional Park. The immediate foreground of the above photograph is currently protected, but much of the land in the mid- to far-background is privately owned, some of it under immediate threat of development or on the active market.
The popular Peavine and Iron King Trails run through private lands that flank the narrow trail right-of-way; thus they are at great risk of losing the recreational value that is a major economic asset to the community. In 2017, the Peavine National Recreation Trail experienced 800,000 user-days, and that figure is growing at 10% per year. Additional unsustainable stresses to the Granite Dells ecosystem from new or proposed housing developments would result in a loss of interconnected wild land, fragmenting wildlife populations and diminishing ecological integrity. This is a critical moment for both people and wildlife. GDPF will be a major player in constructive collaboration seeking a win-win outcome.

direct purchase of land through negotiations with willing sellers
matching funds from the City of Prescott or other entities
conservation easements to protect the land in perpetuity
assistance in grant applications
